July 29, 2019
As many of you may already know, it is with great sadness we share: Harry McWatters, a BC Wine Icon and Pioneer and founder of Sumac Ridge Estate, SYL Ranch, Time Estate, TIME Winery and Evolve Cellars died peacefully in his sleep on July 23rd, 2019.
ABLE BC sends our deepest condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time.
McWatters’ sudden passing comes as a surprise to everyone as he was only last week celebrating the success and anniversary of his downtown Penticton winery, TIME Winery & Kitchen.
McWatters, a legend of the industry, was at the forefront of every significant innovation in the BC wine industry for the past several decades.
As the BCRFA shared, at Sumac Ridge, McWatters created one of the first recognizable brands of wine in BC. At TIME Winery, McWatters’ idea of changing a movie theatre in downtown Penticton into a working winery contributed to the city’s now thriving downtown dining scene.
For more on McWatters many contributions to BC’s wine and hospitality industries, we encourage you to read the various tributes from members of the industry, including: The Hired Belly, the BCRFA, and Town Hall Brands.
Let’s raise a glass of BC wine in Harry’s honour.
