ABLE BC members should be aware that effective May 1, 2017, Rogers and Bell Media will be increasing charges for Sportsnet, TSN, and RDS channels in your establishments.
They have not yet published rates, but the charges will be based on fire/liquor occupancy. However, it has been reported that a bar with a capacity of 0-25 could face additional charges of $60 (TSN) and $75 (Sportsnet) per month. Comparatively, a bar with a capacity of 750-1000 could be charged an additional $300 (TSN) and $375 (Sportsnet) per month.
The complete lack of industry consultation that led to this change is disappointing. As well, all establishments that sell liquor are unfairly being treated the same way, regardless of the bar’s focus and their use of sports channels.
ABLE BC is coordinating efforts with our industry partners Restaurants Canada and BC Restaurant & Food Services Association to work against this sudden change. We have also contacted Rogers and Bell to discuss this issue further.
ABLE BC members are encouraged to share what you are hearing from your local cable providers and how this change may affect you. Share your feedback with ABLE BC’s Danielle Leroux at firstname.lastname@example.org or 604-688-5560.
