In March, ABLE BC hosted our first workplace violence prevention training for liquor retail and on-premise owners, managers, and their staff. The 3.5-hour training was facilitated by ARETE Safety and Protection.
Attendees learned how to safely defuse challenging situations commonly seen in bars and liquor stores – from refusing service to an intoxicated patron to shoplifting and robberies. They also learned how to be more assertive, proactive, and set clear boundaries in violent and difficult situations. Attendees finished off the training by participating in role playing scenarios to practice how these new strategies and tools can be used.
Many of the owners and managers who attended the training said they’ll be requiring all staff to take part in future violence prevention training.
Here’s what some participants had to say:
- Everyone who deals with the public on the daily should take this seminar.
- I am now more confident in handling difficult customers and know how to defuse violent situations.
- I learned how to cope with stressful situations at work and how to create options to deflate violent or difficult situations.
- Attending this seminar highlighted the need for more staff training overall.
