ABLE BC Member Webinar: Understanding Bill 10

Date: Tuesday, June 21, 2022

Time: 10:00 am to 11:00 am

Location: Zoom

RSVP Here

Earlier this month Bill 10 became law, allowing for single-step certification of unions where the union can demonstrate the support of 55% or more of the bargaining unit. This single-step process makes it easier for unions to become certified.

We understand the significant impact this may have on your businesses, and we have already heard concerning reports of unionization efforts in cannabis and liquor retail stores. It’s important for owners to be aware of what this means.

Please join legal experts Ryan Anderson and Mark Bout from MathewsDinsale for a webinar outlining what Bill 10 may mean for your business, and what you need to know about union organizing efforts.

Click here to RSVP and submit questions for the webinar, or email Ann Brydle, Manager of Membership and Communication at ann@ablebc.ca.

Out and About with ABLE BC!

ABLE BC has had an incredibly busy spring! As we emerge from the pandemic, the team at ABLE BC has been busy developing our new strategic plan, building member benefits and services, and hosting face-to-face meetings with licensees across the BC for the first time since 2019. Jeff recently came back from two weeks on the road, and will be in Penticton on June 17th – scroll up for more information!

This past week, Jeff attended a Hospitality Vancouver Association reception featuring Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart. The event was hosted at the new Mansion nightclub inside the rebranded Paradox Hotel, and was attended by several ABLE BC, HVA, and BarWatch members.

During his keynote address, Mayor Stewart announced three significant commitments impacting our industry, which he committed to introduce in the fall budget:

1.   To fund a permanent night time advocate to transform Vancouver’s night time economy into a centerpiece of the city’s social fabric, similar to Amsterdam’s Night Mayor.

2.  To expand the mandate of the Sport Hosting so that the City can start attracting conferences, conventions, music, and trade shows from all corners of the world, as part of promoting Vancouver globally.

3.  Introduce a harmonized 3:00 am bar closing time along Granville Street and look for additional ways to increase service hours and streamline regulations across the city.

Also this week, Jeff and ABLE’s President, Yvan Charette, attended the NDP’s Summer Reception with Premier Horgan and MLAs. Jeff and Yvan used the opportunity to raise our industry’s concerns directly with Premier Horgan, Solicitor General Mike Farnsworth, and Attorney General David Eby.
